TATTOOS: Confessions of a tattoo collector

I'm  what is known as a collector.  I have a growing collection of tattoos from a variety of tattooists. Some people find an artist and stick with them, and although I  have found some amazing artists and have some beautiful  work, part of the fun of getting a tattoo is finding new styles that I love.

So I collect tattoos from different artists, in keeping with their styles. To date I have had five tattooists work on me to varying  degrees. Three of whom have done extensive and large  pieces. This year, I  have another planned already with another tattooist.

As a collector I  have five little confessions  for you.

1. Instagram is your best friend

IG is probably  the best resource for tattoo (see this post for dmore information). Almost all tattooists share their work  on the platform, making it quite easy to find a new tattooist. I've  found two tattooists through IG (one completed  work, one booked) which I wouldn't  have  found  otherwise.

2. And also your worst enemy

But you constantly see tattoos. Which if you're  anything  like me, then just makes  you want another, even though you might not have the cash.  I can't  count how many drawings I've  seen that  are captioned 'available to tattoo' that I've  wanted to cry over because I  don't have  the funds/they live in Australia/have to work.

3. Tattoos are constantly  on the  brain

And the above leads to this. Plus with an extensive collection, others always ask you about them. Tattoos are my hobby - I am in total agreement with this post from Prorebel  - so they're  more often than not on my mind, though sometimes I like to transition it to artwork instead.

4. Tattoo conventions are one of the highlights of the year

I love tattoo conventions. In 2014 I  went to Brighton and London conventions for the first time, and I will definitely  be going to both again I  2015, with a tattoo already booked for Brighton.
To be surrounded  by so many like-minded people is amazing, and not being the odd one out is almost strange. Everyone appreciates each others art, and to be quite honest, the tattooed community is made up of some of the nicest people I've  ever met.

5. No, we have no idea when we will stop collecting

It's really as simple as that.

Are you a tattoo collector? Or any kind of collector? What's  your  confession?

  1. I hate when you find an amazing tattoo on IG/Social Media and then find out the artist is in another country you have no plans to visit anytime soon :(

  2. I would say I'm a tattoo collector. I have five different artists work on me too, and going to Birmingham for a new one in February. I totally agree about instagram, I constantly see new tattoos and think 'Oh my god I need that'
    Your tattoos are gorgeous!

    1. I'm on about six artists and having two more at least this year!
Instagram is my main source of tattoo inspiration - I have a problem!

Thank you, I love them all.

  4. Totally understand. It's so hard to get people to understand "I'm not done collecting." Everybody has a hobby they spend money on: concerts, travel, cars, clubbing, etc. People say "You could save your money by not getting expensive tattoos!" then blow that much in a year just on bar tabs and cab fares. World needs less judgement, more appreciation!

    1. It really is. I guess they're the same people that think they are a waste of money. But I like to think of them as telling my story.
And you couldn't be more right - the world does need more appreciation.

  5. Rachel,

II guess you could say that I am a tattoo collector of sorts. Most of my tattoo's represent a person or a time in my life that have been important or meaningful. At this time I have 8 and a half sleeve with more planned (working around military restrictions puts a damper on tattoo collecting sometimes). I have a geeky half-sleeve, a music one on my left forearm, an infinity symbol with life and love on my right forearm, a breast cancer taft for my best friends mom (she's my other mother), a symbol on each shoulder blade that I plan to either cover up or work into another taft, Jack & Sally on my left calf with a memorial taft for a friend that died on the other side, and tribal penguins for my sister on my right calf. I have plans for more tattoos! Pinterest is both my best friend and worst enemy when it comes to me and tattoos, its where I get a lot of ideas for tattoos, but it makes me want more! I've never been to a tattoo convention before, but it sounds like it would be most interesting!!

    Love, Jenn
