TATTOOS: Tattoos and body confidence from Things and Ink, Issue 9

Body confidence is a huge thing within the media. Body shaming even more so. Tattoos often come into play when discussing either.

Women are shamed for having large amounts, or large pieces instead of small dainty tattoos, with comments of "ruining their natural beauty" and it "not being feminine".

But on the flip side is the confidence tattoos can give you. This topic is addressed massively in the newest edition of Things and Ink.

"I see my colourful tattoos before I see the shape of my body, and then I notice the gaps. I get lost in the ideas of what would fit where and the work I could collect from other tattooists. With tattoos you are never truly naked, they are one thing you can never take off, and I love it."
Rosalie Woodward (Page 5, Things and Ink, Issue 9)

"It's sort of like a caterpillar coming through the chrysalis phase and into a butterfly.. I'd have to say right now I feel the most beautiful I have ever felt."
Sophia Bickerton (Page 36, Things and Ink, Issue 9)

"I'm a work in progress. I'll be at peace with my body once my bodysuit is complete. It's some kind of armour in a way, a filter against stupid people. If some people judge us for our tattoos than those people do not need any of our life."
Delphine Noiztoy (Page 89, Things and Ink, Issue 9)

"My tattoos and modifications make me feel like I am in pyjamas, its a very comfy feeling..."
Yann Brenyak (Page 90, Things and Ink, Issue 9)

And its true. I would never have done my boudoir shoot if I had not had my tattoos. The more I collect, the better I feel about  my body.
To some, it could be seen as covering my natural body, and not dealing with my issues. But to me, I'm enhancing what I have.

Yes, there is an element of covering. My thigh tattoo made me like my thighs more, which are one of my most hated areas of my body. In fact my leg tattoos in general  have boosted my confidence, which is why I will continue to add to them.
My best friend has a huge torso piece that she is having work  added to. She is a lot more confident about her stomach with it, even after having a baby.

    1. Honestly I think Things and Ink is the best tattoo magazine going.
I do find it somewhat bewildering that someones' personal choice can cause so much up roar in others despite it not directly affecting them, but that could be said about so many things in society.
I'm pleased that there are other people who can say their confidence has grown with tattoos.

  2. It's funny that I'm reading this now after getting my new tattoo. Because I feel ALL OF THIS. I feel like my confidence has been boosted 110% now and I'm even thinking of doing a boudoir shoot because of it!

    1. Aww that is amazing. There is definitely a certain buzz after getting a new tattoo.
You should definitely do one. They are an amazing experience - you can read about mine (see My Raremoment Boudoir shoot - in the footer) if you haven't already. The photos came out amazing and once there I wasn't nervous at all!

  3. So interesting to hear how many people feel tattoos give them confidence and can improve their view of body parts they like less. I never thought about them that way and as usual it's great seeing your opinion! To be tattooed and confident is better than to have your 'natural' body and be unhappy! Like I said, really interesting post that has given me a new view on tattoos and the reasons behind peoples' choice to get them!

    1. Thank you Rebecca, to be honest I'm quite astounded by all the positive feedback.
I definitely agree that you should try to be as happy with your body as possible, and if that takes a tattoo, then so be it. I'm pro body modification in all its forms as long as you earn it and it makes you happy.
I'm glad to have given you a new view! :)

  4. Most people out there get a tattoo because it really means something to them, it goes deeper than just a fashion choice. I love the idea that your friend has gotten confidence from her tattoo after the birth of her child . I'm sure people would still find something to crticise about this but if that's the way she could love her body again, then why the hell not!

    1. Totally agree that a lot of tattoos mean something, or because they like tattoos.
I'm certain there are people out there that would say that you should love the body you were given, but at the end of the day, if you're not, do something about it. That would be like living in a house that you hated, and never decorating to make it look nicer and make yourself happier!

  5. I really want to read this issue! I think that's really true. I've suffered for decades with mild to severe skin conditions and my tattoos allow myself to look in the mirror and, instead of focusing on all the crap that I can't control, see someone perfect and awesome. I'm by no means done collecting ink but I'm so much happier now when I think about my body than I was before any of it!

    1. That is great news. I'm the same in a sense. I don't focus on stretch marks or lumps and bumps, I see the colours and designs. And I'm no where near done with my ink, but I am happier with them, than I ever was without them.

  6. Perfect post!
I feel like this every single day. My tattoos make me like my body so much more! When I look down at my huge legs, I no longer want to cover up or hate myself. I'm like, wow I have collected some beautiful art here. I love it.
And those who try to shame have no place speaking about what they dont know :/ I try not to even think about it, the negativity they try to spread is such a waste of my time.
I am glad work places are becoming more accepting of tattoos though, slowly..
The more social acceptance we have, the better.

Also, I do not need tiny/dainty tattoos to feel girly.
I have plenty, and some huge. I fucking love it :)
Awesome post dude, sorry for rambling

    1. Thanks Jemma,
I feel exactly the same way.
More often than not ignorance channels those who shame others, or a lack of personal self confidence.
Yes, slowly work places are becoming more accepting - I'm fortunate that my workplace is relatively good, although I have to cover up for major meetings with directors and clients.

And that last point is brilliant. Honestly the majority of mine are huge, but super girly. I mean I have a Belle from beauty and the beast portrait on my thigh!

Thanks for your ramble - I love it!!

  8. YESYESYES!!!!!!!!!!! I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said in this post!!!!!! Who has the right to judge me on my choice of getting my tattooes???? EVERYONE says the same thing "what will you look like when you're old", "what about your wedding day", "why did you get them", "I hate them can you not get any more please", "I don't like tattooes on women" I'm DONE!!!! It just makes me go to the tattoo parlour and get another one!!!!! Seriously, just leave me alone ok!?!?!? I made the decision myself to get them done alright?! I'm pretty sure I can live with the consequences of that!!! F*K SAKE!!!!!!
The reason I covered myself in tattooes?? Because I had 0% self esteem and 0 body confidence. Now?? I'm at 100% for both simply because I covered up everything I hated with beautiful body art (as well as loosing almost 2-stone in weight and I have a tattoo to celebrate that, too!) Now instead of seeing something that wobbles a bit too much or is a bit bigger/wider than before, I see an amazing piece of art which always makes me smile. =)
Be proud and don't let anyone judge you but yourself. =D
Thank You for this post, although why you should of had to have done it really. But I thank you for highlighting how happy tattooes can make you. xoxoxo
