Defrazzling this New Year

I'm not really into the whole new year, new you speal, but I do think there's something quite poetic about using the new year to improve yourself. The new year is also the exact time that everything that bugs you, really gets to you. Maybe it's because you no longer fit in your jeans from too much festive food (which is just far too upsetting) or maybe it's the fact that payday is just so damn far away, but pretty much everything makes you stressed to the max - well at least that's how I feel half the time!

So when 'A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled'* by Ruby Wax landed on my doormat, I pretty much read it cover to cover in a matter of days.
Now I'm not going to tell you all the little details of the book, because then you wouldn't need to buy it, and you really should buy it, because it's a great book. There is the perfect mix of science backed research, personal quirky anecdotes and helpful advice. All the technical psychological backing is easily explained and simple to understand, making the whole thing easy to digest. It's easy to identify with, and makes following the principles to a more mindful and less stressful life.

With the book in mind, I sat and worked out what makes me frazzled (thankfully I had a rather helpful sheet to write it all down on), so here's my list:

A messy house
Henry crying or upset
Being late for anything
Getting stuck in traffic

Now I know these aren't huge stressers, in fact they're more like mild niggles, but they're little things that leave me feeling out of sorts, that in all honesty probably shouldn't.

Then I wrote down what helps me destress:

Take a hot bubble bath
A cup of tea (with cake if possible)
Read a good book
Go for a walk
A little online shopping (or at least a little online browsing)

Again, no major things here, but as a mum, sometimes these are really hard to do because time just isn't on my side.

But if I've learnt nothing else from this book, is that I need to take more time for me, so for 2017, I'm going to do just that. I'm going to work on letting go of the little frustrations in life, and focus on the things that help me chill and make me happy.

What do you do to feel less frazzled?

  2. I love the idea of the defrazzle flash cards as a reminder! I tend to read, blog, or go for a walk when I need to "defrazzle". Basically anything that allows me to let loose or be creative!

  3. Sounds like a great book, I like to unwind, when feeling frazzeled by going for a run, not matter the weather, always clears my mind.

Must say, the words defrazzle and Ruby Wax were not something I thought I'd ever hear in the one article.
